題名「天人五衰」について

天人五衰（てんにんのごすい）は仏典に現れる語で、六道最高位の天界にいる天人が死の直前に現す５つの兆しのこととされる。能楽「羽衣」では、漁師によって天の羽衣を奪われ天上に帰るすべを失った天人が落胆するさまを「天人の五衰も目の前に見えてあさましや」と謡う。

三島由紀夫最後の長編四部作「豊穣の海」の最終巻の題名となった。この長編の主題は輪廻転生であるが、「天人五衰」では”ニセモノの転生”が問題になる。１９７０年１１月２５日、「天人五衰」を入稿した三島はその当日に陸上自衛隊市谷駐屯所で割腹自殺を遂げた。

 

About the title "The Decay of the Angel"

This phrase originally appears in Buddhist scriptures, in which angels are thought to exist at the top-most level of the transmigration of the soul. As well, the phrase refers to five signs that appear on the body of an angel when she is dying.

In the Noh play "HAGOROMO," an angel descends to earth and has her feathered robes stolen by a fisherman. She is deeply saddened by this because she isn't able to fly back to heaven without them. Her exhausted appearance is expressed as "The Decay of the Angel."

In addition, "The Decay of the Angel" is the last novel of Yukio Mishima and is the fourth and final in his "Sea of Fertility" tetralogy. The theme through the tetralogy is about the transmigration of the soul. But in the last novel, the "falsification of transmigration" becomes a problem. He completed this novel on November 25 in 1970, which is the very day he committed suicide by hara-kiri at JGSDF Camp Ichigaya.

（優雅なロマンスも純粋な使命も官能も唯識思想も） 

「幻の為に生き、幻をめがけて行動し、幻によって罰される」 

（認識の地獄の不死） 

世俗が幻にしてしまった夢を具現化する為に己の腹に刀を突きつける。 

『憂国』 

「日輪は目蓋の裏に赫奕と昇った」 

笑止。夜明けは近い。 

「それも心々ですさかい」
